Sari,
Your doing what you need to do based on the environment you are teaching in right now.

I remember my first few years teaching and there was no emphasis on testing and NCLB requirements. I was able to experiment and be really creative. It's too bad that new teachers today aren't experiencing that as much.

Good luck with the tests!

Sorry to hear about your SMARTboard. I wish I had some "Plan B" advice to give you but I have no experience with student testing. Good luck!

The website I mentioned at the last class is Illuminiations and it is part of Thinkfinity. Here it is: http://illuminations.nctm.org/
There is also a good site for interactive math at: http://nlvm.usu.edu/en/nav/vlibrary.html

Sari,
I've had comments like the AP's throw me off too. Sometimes they really are just joking around; and don't understand that because of their role and position, they are taken very seriously...especially by untenured teachers.

I think you initial instinct was probably correct, you are in your first year and you don't want to get overcommitted to too many outside things. Your most important priority are the kids in your class.

Congratulations Sari! I have a Smart Board and love using it with my math class. If you want, I would be happy to show you some things you can do. Remind me next class!

Sari,
A good place to explore is to find what the kids can do with the board. How can they be active in their learning?

That is great news about your SMARTboard. I have had one for a little over a year now and I use it every day. At first I used it primarily as a screen and projector, then I began to create more interactive content. It just takes a lot of time. (I spent 2 hours this morning creating an activity that will take 20 minutes of class time to do. Fortunately for me, I have seven classes that will use the same activity.)
I have a few pieces of advice. See if you can join some kind of user group so that you can learn from, and help out, others with SMARTboards. Secondly, make sure you search for updates for your gallery from SMARTTECH on a regular basis. Third ... use it all you can and you'll keep finding more ways to use it.

Good luck!

It is always easy to make excuses why you can't take care of yourself. Work and grad school would have been a reason to put off joining a gym at this time. Good for you.
